Having a baby is a huge deal. Not only does your life change almost overnight, but those little people can add enormous strain on things like your relationships, your time and your finances. Lucky they are so damn cute!
If you know someone that is having a baby for the first time, you can be sure that they are going to need the following to help them ease into life together.
1 – Diapers, Lot’s of Diapers
Babies poop a lot, and diapers are expensive. I am yet to meet a new parent who has had enough diapers. Diapers are a bit like chocolate in this regard – can you ever really have enough? If you are struggling to think of something to buy someone when they have just had a child, or if you think your gift is a bit light on, consider giving diapers, I’m certain they will come in VERY handy.
2 – Baby Feeding Items
If you haven’t had a newborn before, you might be surprised to learn that there are all manner of things that can be required to feed your child. Some new moms choose to bottle feed their child, while others like to breastfeed.
If you are going down the bottle feeding route, your biggest concern is going to be cleaning the bottles, making sure you have enough of them, and then making sure you have enough formula.
If you are breastfeeding you will save on formula, but there are plenty of other things that you will likely spend your money on. As an example, you might find that your child doesn’t attach to the breast very well, or that your milk supply hasn’t come in fully. The end result is that your child might not be getting enough milk. This happened with my wife, who then started using an electric breast pump from Medela, which enabled our son to feed normally, but still on breast milk.
Other feeding items you may require are:
- Nursing Pillow
- Nipple Cream
- Nipple Shield
3 – A Diaper Bag
Back to diapers, but this time, a diaper bag. Getting a quality diaper bag is so important, and knowing what makes a good diaper bag can mean the difference between having what you need when you need it, versus being left in the lurch with a poosplosion and nothing to attend to it.
There are so many things that you should look out for when searching for a diaper bag, my good friends wife has put together a great list of diaper bags and things to look for when selecting a diaper bag.
4 – Stroller
Babies don’t come out of the womb walking, and unless you have arms like Arnie, you aren’t going to want to carry a baby around all day long. The answer is simple – you need a stroller!
Strollers come in all different shapes and sizes and much like diaper bags, there really are a few things you need to be on the lookout for before purchasing a new stroller.
First off, do you need a brand new one? I can understand buying a new breast pump and a new diaper bag, but when it comes to strollers, they tend to last a really long time, well, they do if you buy a quality one. Consider a second hand one to save money, or if you really want a new one, there are a heap of different things to be on the lookout for.
The most important thing to consider, is baby safety. Some strollers are prone to toppling over, particularly the three wheel variety. Go for 4 wheels, it will be less maneuverable, but a lot safer.
The next big ticket item is storage space. Diaper bags get heavy, you are going to want to store it on your stroller rather than carry it around with you – trust me.
5 – Baby Monitor
Depending on how far away your child is sleeping from you, you may want to invest in a baby monitor. Baby monitors come in all different shapes and sizes now, with many of the newer models offering video, not just audio.
Do your research though, we went through a few different baby monitors until we found one that had good functionality (songs, temperature monitor, alert tones) as well as good battery life, good sound quality and reception that would span the entire house.
This is one item where generally the more expensive, the better the quality.
6 – BONUS – Things new Moms don’t need
So now that you have an idea of all the things a new Mom requires, here is a short list of things they don’t need more of.
- Plush Toys
Yep, that’s it. Do not buy a plush toy for a new parent. They will have heaps from everyone else, and only a few will ever see the light of day. Spend your money elsewhere.
I put this post together for a good friend of mine, if you are interested in having me write something for you, please get in touch and let’s see what can be arranged 🙂
